Are you a South African youth with Matric and looking for an opportunity to enter the retail industry? The JumpStart Retail Frontline Programme is designed to help unemployed matriculants develop workplace skills, gain practical retail experience and improve their chances of securing entry-level employment.
The programme is a short, intensive work-readiness initiative that combines online learning, in-person training, interviews and practical workplace exposure.

Programme Type: Skills Development and Work Readiness
Duration: Two-week programme
Practical Experience: One week of hands-on retail work experience

Age: 18–33 years

The Retail Frontline Programme is designed to help young people who have completed Matric prepare for entry-level retail positions.
Rather than simply providing classroom-based training, the programme combines different forms of learning and workplace preparation. Participants complete an online life skills course, attend in-person training and interviews, and receive hands-on experience in a retail environment.
This approach allows participants to develop important skills that can help them become more confident and employable when applying for retail jobs.
The programme includes several stages designed to prepare participants for the workplace.
Participants will complete an online life skills course before progressing to in-person training. They will then participate in training and interviews before receiving practical exposure in a retail environment.
The hands-on component gives participants an opportunity to experience what it is like to work in a retail environment and apply some of the skills they have developed during the programme.
The basic requirements for the Retail Frontline Programme are:
Applicants should make sure they meet all the requirements before submitting their applications.
Retail is one of the industries that provides a range of entry-level opportunities for young people. However, having Matric alone does not always mean that an applicant has the workplace skills employers are looking for.
The JumpStart programme focuses on helping participants become more prepared for employment by developing practical workplace skills and providing exposure to a real retail environment.
Participants can strengthen skills such as communication, professionalism, customer interaction, teamwork, reliability and workplace readiness.
Applicants should understand that completing the Retail Frontline Programme does not automatically guarantee permanent employment.
The purpose of the programme is to improve employability and give participants skills and practical exposure that can help them pursue opportunities in the retail sector.
Participants who perform well may be better positioned when applying for suitable entry-level retail positions.
JumpStart has advised that it has received a high volume of applications for the Retail Frontline Programme.
As a result, applications may not currently be open in every area.
Applicants are encouraged to use the programme’s application system and enter their postal code to check whether applications are currently available in their area.
This means that even if applications are temporarily unavailable in your area, it is worth checking the system again when opportunities become available.
JumpStart also offers other skills development programmes, although some programmes listed on its website currently show as closed.
These include programmes focused on warehousing, pattern making and specialised retail employment readiness.
