What is a Lay Counsellor?

A Lay Counsellor plays an important role in supporting public health programmes. You will work directly with individuals and communities to provide basic counselling, health education, and testing services. This includes HIV testing, TB screening, and providing guidance on prevention and treatment options.

This role is especially important in South Africa, where community-based healthcare services help reduce pressure on hospitals and improve access to care.

Key Responsibilities

As a Lay Counsellor, your daily duties will focus on community outreach and health support. Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing HIV Testing Services (HTS) in communities and workplaces
• Conducting index tracing to identify and support at-risk individuals
• Supporting HIV prevention initiatives, including services for pregnant women
• Offering counselling on HIV, TB, and STI prevention and treatment
• Conducting screenings and referring patients to healthcare facilities when needed
• Obtaining informed consent before testing
• Performing finger-prick blood tests for HIV rapid testing
• Recording and managing daily data accurately
• Submitting outreach campaign data according to procedures
• Promoting Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) as a prevention method
• Educating communities about safe health practices

This role requires strong communication skills and a genuine desire to help others.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification
• Must be fluent in English and at least one African language

Knowledge and Skills
