NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE PROGRAMME WITH THE GAUTENG DEPARTMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT 2025-2027

The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development has unveiled a life-changing opportunity for unemployed youth through the National Youth Service Programme (NYS). This initiative, part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), aims to empower 2 500 participants over two years with practical work experience, critical skills development, and a steady income.

This exciting programme is scheduled for the 2025-2027 financial years and focuses on upskilling historically disadvantaged youth in Gauteng. Participants will receive a monthly stipend of R3,500 for the entire two-year duration.

 


 

 

About the National Youth Service Programme

The National Youth Service Programme is designed to address unemployment and skill shortages among young South Africans. By focusing on technical, administrative, and general work streams, the programme equips participants with hands-on experience and training, preparing them for future employment opportunities.

With an inclusive recruitment strategy, the programme prioritizes gender equity, inclusivity of persons with disabilities, and empowerment of historically disadvantaged individuals.

 


 

 

Work Experience Opportunities

The National Youth Service Programme offers three primary streams for participants:

  1. Technical Trade Qualification Positions (Ref #: 2025/01)

This category focuses on technical trades, including:

  • Electrical work
  • Solar installation and maintenance
  • Plumbing
  • Carpentry
  • Welding
  • Air-conditioning and refrigeration
  • Handy work, painting, and more

 


 

 

 

  1. Administrative Qualification Positions (Ref #: 2025/02)

This category includes office-based roles such as:

  • Data capturing
  • Finance and human resource management
  • IT and development studies
  • Social work and psychology
  • Event management, graphic design, and animation

 


 

 

  1. General Worker Positions (Ref #: 2025/03)

This role involves tasks like:

  • Cleaning and gardening
  • Landscaping
  • Laundry services
  • Food service aid

 


 

 

Eligibility Criteria

To join the National Youth Service Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be between 18 to 33 years old (below 35 for the duration of the contract).
  • Hold at least a Grade 11 certificate and possess any relevant qualifications.
  • Be a South African citizen with a valid South African ID.
  • Have no criminal record.
  • Reside near project sites in Gauteng Province.
  • Be willing to commit to the two-year programme and sign a contract.

 


 

 

Application Process

To apply for the National Youth Service Programme, candidates must prepare the following documents:

  1. A comprehensive CV.
  2. Certified copies of qualifications and a valid ID (dated no older than six months).
  3. The NEW Z83 application form

 


 

 

Completed applications must be submitted in person to one of the designated offices across the five Gauteng corridors:

  • Central Corridor (City of Johannesburg):
    1 Central Rohima Moosa Street, New Town, Johannesburg Ground Floor
  • Northern Corridor (City of Tshwane):
    Corner 51 Bloed and Du Toit Streets, Pretoria, Springs Office Ground Floor
  • Eastern Corridor (City of Ekurhuleni):
    72 Main Avenue, Springs Ground Floor
  • Western Corridor (West Rand):
    72 Whiter Street, Randfontein Ground Floor
  • Southern Corridor (Sedibeng):
    A1 Blesbok Street, Vereeniging Ground Floor

Important Notes for Applicants

  • All candidates will undergo criminal record checks before being placed.
  • Participants from previous NYS cohorts are ineligible to apply.
  • The Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development reserves the right to terminate participation during the programme, if necessary.
